Texts as outreach materials
Outreach describes the communication of current research results and methods to the general public and in the meaning of the KiSOC also into formal education. The aim of the study to this regard is to determine the potential of popular science texts as outreach media in comparison to classical textbooks with regard to the teaching of science comprehension in the classroom. In addition, the objective is to sensitize future teachers for the use of such texts in order to strengthen the communication of "How does science actually work?" in schools. Initially, the typical genre characteristics of language, design and content are determined, especially with regard to the representation of an "image of science". Subsequently, university students of chemistry education will reflect on relevant texts with regard to opportunities, barriers and didactic potential. Included in this part of the study, interactions between the perception of the genres and the pedagogical content knowledge, content knowledge and beliefs will be examined.
So far, genre analyses of schoolbook texts, popular science articles and scientific articles have been carried out as part of the project. In addition, a think-aloud as well as a guided interview study on the perception of texts and subject-didactic reflection with chemistry education students were run for piloting the instruments. The corresponding main study will be carried out in the winter semester 2017 / 2018. This is followed by a quantitative survey and a pre-post study on the students’ professional knowledge in order to determine the reciprocal interaction between textual and didactic aspects of professional knowledge depending on the genre received.
